Using Resveratrol For Your Health

By Laura Lane

Oprah Winfrey is known for providing her viewers with expertly researched advice concerning the latest advancements in medical advancements, particularly as they relate to the concerns of an aging American population. Recently, Oprah featured the Turkish-American cardiologist Dr. Mehmet Oz. According to Dr. Oz, the recently discovered antioxidant known as resveratrol may be the key to slowing or even-in some cases-reversing the aging process.

Fight Toxins, Fight Aging

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances that protect the body from oxidants-toxins that damage the tissues of the body, causing the visually evident wrinkles on the skin, as well as the less obvious damage to the body's internal systems. Antioxidants help to defend the body, particularly its organs, brain cells, and the nervous system. Moreover, they help to remove the oxidants and even repair damage caused by the aging process.

Resveratrol and Sirtuins

Resveratrol is one of the most powerful antioxidants discovered to date. How does resveratrol work? This antioxidant activates "Sirtuins," a type of longevity gene capable of both reducing cellular decay and aiding the cells of the body to restore themselves. As a result, a person who takes resveratrol as a dietary supplement can expect to not only feel better on the inside as the health of their internal systems improves, but also to see a marked improvement in the appearance, tone, and coloring of the skin.

Many observable advantages are generated by taking resveratrol. Resveratrol boosts the immune system, aiding both cancer patients and people who have suffered some kind of injurious exposure to radiation. It has helped many lose weight as well.

Still, this is only the tip of the iceberg! Studies concerning resveratrol are still in their infancy, and GlaxoSmithKline has already invested almost a billion dollars to further our knowledge of this seemingly miraculous antioxidant.

A Natural Solution

Chances are you have already consumed resveratrol at some point in your life, though you probably weren't aware of it! Utilized for ages in the East as a restorative cure found in Japanese Knotwood, resveratrol was given the name "ko-jo-kon" in 1963. Japanese Knotwood is not, however, as exotic as you might imagine. In more than thirteen states it has been designated as a hostile and overwhelming weed, with the capacity to overrun your backyard in no time. The power of this plant is generated by-you guessed it-the large amounts of resveratrol contained within it. Knotwood has so much resveratrol that companies have begun using it to create dietary supplements, although some people simply cultivate it and cook with it: Knotwood is a tasty replacement for rhubarb.

Peanuts-ordinary, everyday peanuts, available in bulk at your local grocery store-are another source of resveratrol. Indeed, though they appear to be high in fat, studies show that people who ingest peanuts on a regular basis actually have a lower body fat percentage than the average person.

Yet another source of resveratrol was found in 1992: the grapevine and, accordingly, red wine derived from it. A glass of red wine a day is now considered to be a healthy option for most heart-conscious adults. Nonetheless, when it comes to resveratrol, consider the fact that it would take nearly a thousand bottles of red wine to generate the amount of resveratrol that you will find in a single dosage of a resveratrol supplement!

Comparison Between Acai Berry Diet And The Green Tea Diet

By Dana Hawkes

Green tea is a product that eachone knows about and most people love because of the weight loss miracles that it seems to have been able to induce. The acai berry diet in most ways is similar to the green tea diet because of its power. At the end of the day though, the acai diet has some advantages over green tea that make it a better option.

For starters, the acai berry is a natural product that you can take in. It is a fruit and because of that it fits quite naturally into your diet. Green tea on the other hand is something that might not fit naturally into a person's diet because all of them do not drink tea. It is perfectly valid not to drink tea in your diet, but if a person does not eat any fruits in their diet, they need to make a dietary change in the worst way.

Another difference has to do with the particles that are included within each of the two substances. When you are dealing with the acai berry diet, what you should notice is the fact that it is a completely natural ingredient that you could actually pluck off a tree and eat if you were in the right part of the world. Green tea is not a natural product, but rather a drink taken from tea leaves that contain caffeine. Not everyone likes caffeine or is willing to take it in, which once again gives the acai diet the advantage.

One thing to like about both of the products is that they are easily convertible to other sources. Green tea is present in drink, pill and patch form while the acai berry is available in normal, dry, powder and capsule form. This flexibility is definitely something to be desired.

There is nothing terribly negative to say about either of these two methods of weight loss, because both of them work and have both scientific backing and long term results to prove their points. In the end though, more people are suited to the acai berry diet for the reasons that have been listed above.

Do You Let the Weights Win or Do You Build Muscle?

By Josh Scott

What type of approach do you take when it comes to weight training and working out?

Are you prepared to lift weights and workout?

Do you take a log book to the gym with you?

How much weight did you lift last time? How many reps did you do?

You MUST have a plan to improve on your previous performance. Each and every time you step into the gym, you should always improve. Within your mind, there is NO OTHER OPTION. If you don't lift heavier weights and do more reps, your body will never see the need to build muscle. It just won't happen...

With that said, I'm going to tell you right now that you need a certain mindset when you enter those gym doors. If you want to build muscle, you're going to have to develop this mindset.

Preparing your mind for weight training is vital. If you fail to prepare your mind and develop this mindset, you are doomed for failure. You'll end up working your butt off and getting nothing in return. No one wants that.

If you want to make progress each workout, build muscle each workout, and get the body you've always wanted, you need to listen up. Don't do what I did and waste years and years of time.

You MUST develop a warrior mentality each and every time you step into the gym. Seriously. A warrior prepares for battle. A warrior takes the battle seriosuly and lets nothing get in his/her way.

When those gym doors shut behind you, there's absolutely no turning back. You are now in the middle of the battle arena. It's you against the weights. You don't turn back. You don't quit. You draw your weapon (your log book), and you give everything you have. The time is now.

If you think weight lifting and building muscle is easy, you're in for a surprise. It takes hard work to build muscle. Lifting heavier weight and doing more reps every workout is a battle. And that's why you must prepare your mind. You must never give up. You must prove to your body that it needs more muscle.

If you've lifted weights before, you'll know that there comes a time during each and every set in which your mind warns you to STOP THE SET. Your mind tells you that this is just too much to handle for your current body. Do you think a warrior would quit?

NO. Hell No. A warrior does not quit. It doesn't matter what it takes. A true warrior will do whatever it takes to win the battle. A warrior laughs at pain and wants more. Victory is near. Never stop fighting.

Now, can you develop this mentality? Can you find the warrior hiding inside of you? Each and every one of us have that warrior. Find that warrior and start building muscle today. Prepare for each and every battle or you will lose. Get your log book out and go to war! Have fun!

The Marvels Of Mediterranean Seasoning

By Ferdinand Emy

Like in every other type of cooking in the cuisine of the Mediterranean, people actually utilise Mediterranean seasoning. Evidently, the food of the areas surrounding the Mediterranean sea is the Mediterranean cuisine. The fact is that the Mediterranean cuisine contains foods from varied cultures. Given the geography of the Mediterranean, these nation-states have influenced each other in time and the cooking process evolved into sharing common rules. Flexibility and a broad range of ingredients and numerous regional varitions characterised the Mediterranean cuisine. The area inclined to favor goats and sheep rearing.

Although currently much of the fish is shipped from the outside since the fisheries of the Mediterranean sea are no longer what they used to be, fish dishes are still very common. In numerous of the standard Mediterranean dish recipes, seafood is still dominant. It is quite evident that certain types of meats and fruit or vegetables, as it is the case with Mediterranean cuisine, ask for specific/typical seasoning, in this case, Mediterranean seasoning. Pita bread, barbecue or grilled meats, falafel and hummus are among the Mediterranean foods which normally demand a special seasonings which are found in the area around Mediterranean seasoning apparently.

Talking of Mediterranean seasoning you must know that olive oil, though not necessarily a condiment, is produced in the Mediterranean countries " Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Italy and Spain, as well as others. An important ingredient in Mediterranean seasoning is represented by garlic, which is used a lot throughout Mediterranean cuisine. Both the olive oil and the garlic employed in Mediterranean seasoning and cuisine in general, add to the distinctive taste of food. Besides, it is unanimously believed that the ingredients in this kind of cooking and in Mediterranean seasoning, and we have in mind especially the olive oil, are a major contributor to the longevity and good health state of the Mediterranean people.

You will no doubt need Mediterranean seasoning if you are interested in making Mediterranean dishes, or you will not attain real Mediterranean food. You may easily buy several commodities which are labeled Mediterranean seasoning from stores around the country, nonetheless, my recommendation is for you to try to prepare your own Mediterranean seasoning because it is not difficult at all.

To obtain a good Mediterranean seasoning you only require the right ingredients and a true Mediterranean seasoning recipe, like the one below. This combo is what I call Mediterranean seasoning. How much you utilise does not matter, all you require to do is to combine the ingredients in the following proportions in a bowl, whisk, and then pour into a shaker. Put it in a container and place it in the fridge and there it is when you want to employ it for a quick dusting on grilled meat, or for a marinade: one part coriander, 1 part cinammon, 1 part cumin, 1 part dried mint, and one part Italian seasoning or oregano; Besides, add 1 part onion powder and 1 part garlic powder.

Sleep Better At Night With The Acai Berry Diet

By Dana Hawkes

The acai berry diet has been credited with a number of things, but did you know that one of the claims made on its behalf is that it has the capacity to help people sleep? It might sound a bit strange, but the fact of the matter is that it is true. You can add improved sleep to the long list of accolades that the acai diet has been able to accrue over the relatively short period of time that it has been in use in the First World.

It is largely anecdotal and with little scientific backing, but there are a handful of studies out there that show that the acai berry might have something to do with the improved sleep that people get when they are on the diet.

Specifically, there are two things that people claim to get vis--vis their sleep when on the acai berry diet. First, they feel as though their sleep is far more restful at night, with relatively few interruptions and periods of waking when compared with what they would normally expect. At the same time, these people are also reporting that they wake up feeling far more refreshed thanks to the acai diet, a fact that does not necessarily follow since people that sleep better at night tend to wake up feeling better in the morning as well.

This particular claim is problematic, only because it is difficult to judge it. Specifically, the problem is in the area of knowing whether the sleep improvements are directly something that can be connected with the present of the acai berry, or rather a positive side effect of the weight loss and better fitness that people tend to have when they go on this particular diet. Even studies that have determined the sleep improvement correlation to be true have trouble with this fact because it is nearly impossible to tell which of those two factors are ultimately responsible for the sleep improvements.

At the end of the day though, it really doesn't matter which of those two cause better sleep. What matters is that the acai berry diet has been tied to a marked improvement in a person's sleep patterns and that is just one more reason why it is a worthwhile diet to try.

Soy Beans and Weight Loss

By Gary Picariello

I've written about soy beans before (check the AC archives). Soy beans are fast becoming the "next big thing" in a healthy lifestyle. Soy beans can be processed into many ways for easy consumption - for example hotdogs, milk, steaks and ice cream. Most soy bean products (at least those I've tried lately) taste pretty good. Current research being conducted at the University of Illinois on lab rats is demonstrating when soy consumption goes up, an individual's weight goes down. And you can imagine, in weight-loss circles this is pretty exciting news.

According to an article on Webmd.com, scientists discovered that soy consumption increased metabolism in lab rats. Scientists compared soy peptides with leptin. Leptin is a hormone released by your fat cells. Although it has a number of functions, one of leptin's main roles is to let your brain know when your stomach is full. So, lab rats according to webmd.com were injected in the brain with a form of soy protein; then researchers injected leptin as a positive control. When the scientists could see their model was working, they injected two formulations of hydrolyzed soy protein and soy peptides so the scientists could monitor the effects of each on food intake and weight loss.

Injections were given three times a week for two weeks; during that time, the animals had unlimited access to food and water. Food intake was measured 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours after injection, and the rats were weighed 24 and 48 hours after injection. All rats received the same amount of exercise, and all rats lost weight.

This isn't the first experiment that touts the virtue of soy bean protein. According to an article in herbalvitality.info, protein is an excellent "anchor for one's diet because it's a high-quality protein that's low in fat and calories. It also has a low glycemic index, which means it won't trigger a sharp increase and decrease of blood sugar. Recent studies have also shown that soy protein helps reduce hunger and extend the period of feeling "full." And, the FDA states that 25 grams of soy protein per day, with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Experts say that to receive the full benefits of soy isoflavones, a health expert panel advocates 160 mg a day, which is approximately the amount contained in 6 glasses of soy milk or 6 servings of tofu.

A few words about soy and protein in general. According to naturesbounty.com, protein is necessary for rebuilding tissue, which is especially important for bodybuilders. All types of protein provide the body with amino acids. From an athletic point of view, soy is just another type of protein. Choosing soy protein over other types of protein adds variety to the protein choices available. However, because soy lowers cholesterol, it is an excellent choice for those also trying to lower their cholesterol levels. Soy is a common ingredient in many meal replacements that are designed to provide a large amount of nutrients in a minimal amount of calories. Animal and human studies have suggested that when soy is used as a source of dietary protein, it may have several biological effects on the body that might help with weight loss. In fact, a preliminary study found that people trying to lose weight using a meal-replacement formula containing soy protein lost more weight than a group not using any formula.

Meanwhile, the U of I experiment not only showed that soy peptides could interact with receptors in the brain, it also demonstrated that eating less isn't always the reason for weight loss.
